Thanks for praying for my Dad

My dad, Paul Kendall, is back in the hospital. This has been a rollar coaster ride for him. We've had multiple problems over the last years but what we are facing now is "life threatening" the doctor told us today. He said we have some important choices to make regarding the next steps. His kidney function is down to 14% and their is nothing more they can do to improve it. We are at the place where either his body rallies, God intervenes or we plan for an honorable exit to eternity. We appreciate your prayers.

If you want to follow our journey you can do so at Caring Bridge. We will post updates there. Thanks for standing with my family during this time. My dad is certainly ready to go when the time is right, we just don't know when that is. We want him to stay every day he can but none of want him to suffer beyond where he has the ability to communicate with us. You can imagine the challenges. We meet with hospice tomorrow. Thanks for praying.

A good friend of mine lent me John Ortberg's book "Faith & Doubt" and in it he writes about how there are many O.T. Bible stories that are "three-day stories". They deal with crisis and urgency as to where the pressure is so crushing that God must show up to rescue or "it's curtains". They are "stories of desperate need and of anticipation and hope hanging by a thread."

He says that "the third day" was used so often in the O.T., it became an expression meaning a time to wait for deliverance, as in "Right now things are messed up. Right now, hope is being crushed. Right now, hearts are disappointed. But a better day is coming".

Then came Jesus.

And in the end, "took him and lashed him with a whip and pierced him with a sword and hung him on a cross".

That was the first day--a dark day, a wretched day. His followers were crushed and scared.

On the second day Pilate posted a guard to stand watch over the tomb 'cause he was in charge now. His followers hid in seclusion. That was a dark, disappointing day. "They had seen his glory for a while, and now it was gone. Now it was lying in a tomb."

"But the story of Jesus is a three-day story....the third day is God's day." When prisoners of Pharaoh get set free, when stones are rolled away. The third day is the day a crucified carpenter came back to life... when a little band of frightened men and women said, "I don't know how it happened, but the third day came."

The third day is God's day. You never know what God is going to do, because God is "God of the third day." From that third day on , the world has never been the same. His followers changed from the Sabbath to Sunday..."The Lord's Day", because the kingdom they all had hoped for turned out to be real!

"You never know what might happen on the third day. I cling to that. I put all my hope in a third-day God."

Then Ortberg wrote something that struck me as very poignant. He said "BUT I LIVE IN A SECOND-DAY WORLD."

All Christians...we are all third-day people living in a second-day world.
